SAN FRANCISCO – Solstar Space will provide Wi-Fi access for crew and devices in the NASA lunar Gateway Habitation and Logistics Outpost (HALO) module, under a contract the New Mexico in-orbit communications startup signed with Northrop Grumman Corp.

Within the HALO module, which is scheduled to launch in 2024 and serve as an initial habitat for crews visiting the lunar Gateway, Solstar will provide Wi-Fi access through a device smaller than a laptop.

“Persistent connectivity is crucial for space-based operations,” Solstar co-founder Mark Matossian said in a statement.

The Solstar wireless access point “will provide a Wi-Fi network for connectivity that will support astronaut communications with ground control, the lunar surface and spacecraft, while also supporting payload integration, experiments and more,” Matossian added. “It will securely connect Wi-Fi-enabled components including computers and IoT sensors, creating a collection of space-based networked devices.”

Solstar Space makes big strides as it leverages Microsoft for Startups program to build the Space Wide Web for persistent space-based communications.

May 9, 2022 – SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO, USA – Solstar Space (Solstar), the company making persistent in-orbit communications available, announces Microsoft has selected Solstar as a Microsoft for Startups Partner.

“We are proud to be working with Microsoft as we develop space-based communications solutions that will support the next generation of spacecraft including satellites, space stations, and space-based outposts,” says M. Brian Barnett, Founder and CEO, SolstarSpace Company. “As we work with our clients to connect everything and everyone in space, software is playing a central role in that connectivity for IoT, and mobile devices used aboard spacecraft. Whether it is onboard communications or supporting space-based research that requires scientists on Earth to connect with resources aboard a space station, it is great to have the support of Microsoft’s Founders Hub,” shares Barnett.

Designed to support all founders from idea to exit, Microsoft for Startups Founders Hub brings together the technology, guidance, and support founders need to hit milestones.

Solstar is focused on making WiFi in space available to support sub-orbit, LEO, and cis-lunar and lunar surface operations. Solstar’s WiFi access points and space communicators offer space operations the ability to treat spacecraft as a collection of IoT devices, interacting with onboard experiments and other electronics using the IP protocol.

Solstar plans to leverage Azure’s IoT Hub to enable customers to interact with assets in space via API or web interface.

Cybersecurity for space assets is an area of specialized focus for Solstar. The company is enabling space-based operations to connect its technology in space to the internet and securing those connections is central to the company’s approach. The Solstar Space VPN will utilize Azure for its infrastructure and make internet connections to spacecraft and onboard components both secure and convenient.

A Santa Fe startup that helps people connect to out-of-this-world technologies is the first-ever Inno Madness champion.

Solstar Space Co. beat Build With Robots in the final round of voting to take home the crown. The friendly, bracket-style contest got underway at the start of March with 16 New Mexico startups. The goal was to showcase a variety of innovative tech startups across the state (click here to read more about Inno Madness).

Solstar’s innovations focus on internet connectivity.

The internet might be widespread on earth, but connections can be limited in space. That means operators of satellites and other space objects may not be able to consistently send or receive data from their airborne technology. Solstar, formed five years ago, offers solutions via devices that are meant to facilitate space-based connectivity.

New space communications terminal earns accolades for providing persistent narrowband connectivity from any internet connected device on Earth or in space.

March 23, 2022 – SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO, USA –  (Solstar), the company making persistent in-orbit communications available, announces its Deke Space Communicator (Deke) designed for narrowband communications for suborbital and orbital spacecraft and launch vehicles has been recognized with the New Space Mobile Innovation Award during MSUA’s 2022 Satellite Mobile Innovation Awards. Deke is designed to be about the size of a deck of cards, and engineered to be seamlessly integrated into CubeSats, SmallSats, space stations, launch vehicles, and more to provide reliable, secure two-way persistent communications with launch vehicles and on-orbit assets from any internet connected device anywhere on Earth or in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). It also provides reliable and resilient operational status and alerts for LEO satellites to Mission Operations Centers (MOC).

“We are thrilled that the Deke Space Communicator has been recognized by the respected panel of judges for this year’s MSUA Satellite Mobile Innovation Awards. Solstar is addressing one of the biggest challenges for space-based communications today – the up to 90% of the time where there aren’t any communications with an orbiting space-based asset,” says M. Brian Barnett, Founder and CEO, Solstar Space Company.

“Once activated, the Deke Space Communicator will provide narrowband connectivity and airtime service to meet the requirements of payload managers, satellite operators, and a broad range of research and IoT use cases. It’s not necessary to launch any new communications satellites to provide this service. There are plenty of great commercial assets already on orbit and a lot more on the way. Leveraging existing commercial satellite networks saves time and money for our customers,” continues Barnett.

“The Deke Space Communicator is a persistent, bi-directional critical data relay that provides narrowband communications. It is small, lightweight, space-hardened, and designed to be installed on a broad range of spacecraft from satellites to space stations,” says Paul Frey, Director of Product Development, Solstar Space. “The Deke Space Communicator is a perfect solution for IoT applications, medical monitoring for crew and research, command and control, and for persistent management of on-orbit payloads and experiments. Deke is also a great communications solution for redundancy. We expect to fly our Deke Space Communicators as early as 2023,” continues Frey.

The Deke Space Communicator honors NASA astronaut Donald “Deke” Slayton, one of the original Mercury 7 astronauts.
